Spend an unforgettable evening at Bakers Island Light this summer!

For the health and safety of our guests, staff, volunteers, private island residents, and the entire community, Essex Heritage will offer limited access to Bakers Island Light during the 2020 season.

We are adhering to the current safety recommendations and following state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19 in order to reduce the risk of exposure to the virus. We will also implement our own guidelines to help mitigate the risk further.*

**Two-night minimum booking is to limit overnights to one group per weekend. This will greatly reduce the amount of cleaning and sanitizing needed to protect guests and our volunteer keepers. This minimum will only be in effect for the 2020 season.
***All guests in the party must be living in the same household.

THE SPACE
Accommodates: Up to 6
Bathrooms: 1 ½
Bedrooms: 3
Beds: 5 (1 full, 4 twin beds)

The Assistant Keeper's House is simple–some might say rustic. It is "off the grid" which means it is solar powered with limited lighting, basic furniture, filtered well water and a limited amount of hot water.

Bedrooms: There are three bedrooms - one with a full-sized bed and the others with two twin beds each. The beds have mattresses. Overnight guests will need to bring their own sheets (or a sleeping bag), pillows, and comforter.

Bathrooms: Guests will need to bring their own towels and bathroom supplies (soap and toothpaste). Limited hot water available for showers.

Kitchen: There is a kitchen with a propane fueled stove. Overnight guests will need to bring their own food – enough for your dinner, breakfast, and any snacks. We have a basic collection of pots and pans, cups, utensils, plates, and a French-press to make coffee. There is a refrigerator, but it is small (dorm size).
THE EXPERIENCE
Stay at the Assistant Keepers House at the Bakers Island Light Station – just like when the keepers of old still lived there. Your own private getaway… at a light station! "Unplug" from life's crazy and relax.

RELAX
Picnic on the well-kept lawn, or use the picnic table!
Swim at the light station’s private beach (it’s a rocky shore, so we recommend some kind of beach/water shoe)!
Soak up the sun – we have several outdoor lounge chairs!
Hit one of the trails! We have more than a half mile of walking paths that have great views of the cliffs and coast!
Play games – inside or out! We have board games, and classic lawn games like bocce and croquet!
Fishing (with a license and your own gear)!
And, while we can’t offer a luxury B&B experience, our 2020 volunteer lighthouse keepers will be in the Main Keeper’s House next door! They will help get you settled in, answer questions and offer assistance in case of an emergency.

LIGHT STATION & HOUSE RULES
Absolutely NO Smoking. There is no fire station on the island and we want to keep everyone safe.
You are not permitted to leave the property. We ask you to please respect the privacy of the summer residents.
Join us in taking care of our environment: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Trash rules: Pack it in, and pack it out. All trash must be carried out by guests. Trash bags will not be provided on the island.
You are responsible for putting the rooms back in order prior to departure.
Face masks are required when guests are traveling on board Naumkeag and when social distancing can not be maintained from other guests or volunteers.

GETTING TO THE ISLAND
Bakers Island is located about 4 miles off the coast from Salem. Most of the 55-acre island is private, residential but the 10-acre light station on the north side of the island is owned and managed by the Essex National Heritage Commission. There are a few options to get to the island for your overnight visit:
  1. Ride on Naumkeag, Essex Heritage's 32' Munson landing craft. With a capacity of 18 passengers and two crew, Naumkeag is the only boat capable of ferrying the public to Bakers Island Light Station and landing directly on the beach. The ride out to the island is roughly 30-minutes each way. There is no public dock at Bakers Island, so visitors must navigate a rocky beach to get to the light station. Passage on Naumkeag to Bakers Island Light Station is included in the cost of an overnight (passage on Naumkeag is not included in the price of renting a campsite). Times to and from the island are on a set schedule. Please inquire about the timing when requesting a booking.
  2. Take your own boat and rent a mooring. Essex National Heritage Commission has one mooring available for 24-hour rentals. Moorings are available from 12:00noon to 12:00noon the following day. If you would like to come ashore, you must have your own transportation from your boat to the beach. There is no ferry service available.

Cancellation Policy
If Essex Heritage cancels the boat trip because it is too stormy or the seas are too rough, you will be fully refunded the cost of your overnight or we will work with you to try and identify an alternate date.

If reservation holder cancels, reservations are non-refundable.

Reservations are not eligible for any discounts at this time.

Stay in the historic Assistant Keeper's House. For reservations or questions, please contact ryanc@essexheritage.org.
